This movie is based on the book by Dr Seuss.  As the story goes, Sally and Conrad are sitting at home on a rainy day while their mother is at work when the Cat in the Hat appears to help make their day fun.  They fix the couch so they can jump on it properly, make muffins, cut off Cat’s tail and trash the house.  Cat tells them, “don’t worry I’ll clean it up” and brings in “the crate” containing thing one and thing two, who make it even worse.  After letting out thing one and thing two the lock from the crate clips itself onto the dog’s neck and the dog runs away.

Cat warns them that he has to get the lock back because otherwise his world, from the crate, will spill over into their world and start changing it.  So they go out to find the dog and their house starts changing.  When they eventually get home with the dog they find the house to be perfect until Quinn, their mom’s boyfriend, turns up and takes one step too far, and rips the picture of their house and they find out it has been transformed completely into another world.  They eventually get the crate closed and clean up the house, just in time for their mum to get home.

Some quotes from the movie:

The Fish: Stop this right now!
Sally: The fish is talking.
The Cat: Sure, he can talk. But is he saying anything? No, not really.

The Cat: [showing his car] Here she is, the Super Luxurious Omnidirectional Whatchamajigger, or S-L-O-W for short.
Sally: S-L-O-W?
The Cat: Yeah, S.L.O.W. It’s better than the last thing we had: Super Hydraulic Instantaneous Transporter.
Conrad: Oh, you mean…
The Cat: NO! Quick! To the S.L.O.W.!

The Cat: [as the cook] Delicious cupcakes are just minutes away.
The Cat: [as a cooking show host] Did you say minutes away? That’s impossible!
The Cat: [as the cook] You’re not just wrong, you’re stupid.
The Cat: [as a cooking show host] Now, wait just a minute…
The Cat: [as the cook] And you’re ugly, just like your mum.

Sally: Who are you?
The Cat: Who, Me? Why I’m The Cat in the Hat, there’s no doubt about that. I’m a super fundiferous feline, who’s here to make sure that you’re…”meline”…”key lime”…”turpentine”. I got nothing! I’m not so good with the rhyming, not really, no. Look, I’m a cat that can talk that should be enough for you people!

This movie was so well made.  It isn’t exactly a children’s movie, it is more of a 10+ movie.

The costumes are amazing and all of the actors, especially Mike Myers, play their parts really well making it a thoroughly enjoyable movie, even if it is a bit cheesy and almost pathetic at times!

Task 5–Evaluation

November 3, 2006

today i came in early and finished my task.

the tables and relationships are exactly what i wanted them to be, with linked tables, buttons and everything works really good.

my colour scheme is school themed and i think it is easy to read and wouldn’t cause too much strain on the user’s eyes.

if i had to do this task (yet) again i would do it in a better program and make it complex, and really good with search bars and everything!

i enjoyed this task but i don’t want to do it again.

Movie review-peter pan

Movie Review-Peter Pan

This is a Columbia Pictures INC, Universal Pictures and a Revolution Studios film.

Produced by Lucy Fisher Patrick McCormick and Douglas Wick

Written by J.M Barrie

Directed by P.J. Hogan

Starring:

Jason Isaacs as Hook and Mr Darling

Jeremy Sumpter as Peter

Rachel Hurd-Wood as Wendy

Richard Briers as Smee

Harry Newell as John Darling

Freddie Popplewell as Michael

Ludivine Sagnier as Tink.

This movie tells the, ever classic, story of Peter Pan, The boy who never grew up.

It starts off with Wendy telling a story to John and Michael, while Peter listens at the window.  Soon after this, Wendy is told she has the “special kiss”, a kiss that is meant for only one man, a trait she inherited from her mother and that she must move out of the nursery and, as the traditional story goes, on her final night in the nursery Peter appears to get his shadow, teaches them to fly and leads them to the address of “the second star on the right and then straight on til morning”, otherwise known as Neverland.

Upon arriving Wendy is separated from her brothers who are captured by Hook.

Through out the movie we are shown confrontations between Hook and Peter, finally resulting in one where Hook destroys all of Peter’s happy thoughts and he is unable to fly.  When all hope seems lost Wendy leans over Peter and kisses him. He flies up in the air and Hook joins him in a final battle.  Peter starts a chant to destroy Hook’s happy thoughts and he concedes and falls out of the sky, straight into the crocodile’s mouth. Wendy, her brothers and the Lost Boys all return to Wendy’s house to be taken in by Mr and Mrs Darling.

Some Quotes!

“I do believe in fairies, I do! I do!”

(as Wendy leans over Peter to kiss him)

“this belongs to you, and always will”

(While Peter and Hook are fighting the final battle)

(this is the chant that everyone below them on the deck of the ship starts to repeat)

Peter: “you are old”

Echo: “old”

Peter: “Alone”

Echo: “alone”

(the croc jumps out of the water and starts snapping at Hook)

Peter-Smiles: “Done for”

I love the story of Peter Pan and I have seen all every movie with a retelling or a sort of link to it.  My top two favourites are Hook with Robin Williams and this one.  It tells the story with parts that haven’t been in the previous ones and has amazing costumes and settings. I recommend it as a family movie because the story is classic and everyone can enjoy it.

Finding Nemo is a Walt Disney and Pixar Film.

Albert Brooks-Marlin

Ellen DeGeneres-Dory

William Dafoe-Gill

Vicki Lewis-Deb/Flo

Andrew Stanton-Squirt

The story tells of two clown fish Marlin and Coral who have just moved into a new home on the Barrier Reef.  They lay their eggs and settle down together.  Soon after Coral and all the eggs, bar one that only gets damaged, are eaten.  This egg is named Nemo and he grows up to have a “dicky” fin. On his first day of school he is taken to “the drop off” (the edge of the barrier reef) and him and two friends dare each other to go touch the “butt” (boat).  Marlin, who is very protective of his son, catches them and stops Nemo. While Marlin is distracted, talking to Nemo’s teacher, Nemo swims out and touches it, on the way back he is captured and taken to
Sydney to live in a tank.  The story goes on to show Marlin searching for Nemo and making a friend on the way, the ever forgetful, Dory.  They search together and after encounters with sharks with the motto “Fish are friends, not food”, a school of fish that play charades as a group, a swarm of jellyfish, a family of turtles, and a whale that eats them, they finally make it to
Sydney. In between shots of Marlin and Dory we see Nemo.  He is adjusting to living with the “Tank Gang”, Gill, Bubbles, Deb/Flo, Bloat, Peach, Jacques, and, after an acceptance ceremony, he is known to them as SharkBait.  After many attempts to escape from the tank, finally, one is successful and Nemo is reunited with his dad.

Some of my favourite quotes from this movie are:

(Chest opens, bubbles come out of it, Bubbles the fish appears, swimming madly towards it) “Bubbles! Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles” (leaps on chest), “My Bubbles!”

(Darla screaming as Nemo lands on her) “Fish in ma hair!”

Dory- “Ahh, something’s got me!”

Marlin-“that was me”

Dory-“whose that?”

Marlin-Who’s that? Who do you think it is? It’s me!”

Dory-“are you my conscious?”

Marlin-“ Yes I’m your conscious, we haven’t spoken in a while, how are you?”

Dory-“Yea, Can’t complain”

Dory to Marlin about Jellyfish-“I shall name him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy…come here lil fella…ah, Bad Squishy”

Mini Squid to other little fish-(looking at boat floating in water) “Whoa…that’s a big butt”

Seahorse- “I’m H2O intolerant”

Bubbles: So, the Big Blue. What’s it like?
Nemo: Umm… big… and blue?
Bubbles: I knew it.

This is my all time favourite movie. Except for the actors who voiced the characters, all of this info, including quotes, is from memory! This is a family movie, with awesome graphics and characters that you just have to adore. I highly recommend it to everyone who hasn’t seen it.

Movie review–Dirty dancing, Havana Nights

October 31, 2006

Movie Review- Dirty Dancing:
Havana Nights

This is a Miramax film.

Produced by- Sean Garret Fogel

Written by- Victoria Arch

Directed by- Guy Ferland

Starring:

Diego Luna as Javier Suarez

Romola Garai as Katey Miller

Sela ward as Jeannie Miller

John Slattery as Bert Miller

Mika Boorem as Susie Miller

Jonathon Jackson as James Phelps

This story is set in the time of the Cuban Revolution.  The Millers are moved to
Cuba for Bert’s job and in the first day Katey meets Javier who works at the hotel.  The next day she misses the bus and sees him dancing to buskers in the street, he catches her eye and he walks her back to the hotel inviting her to La Rosa Negra, a Havana nightclub, that weekend, Katey, unfortunately as to decline as she has already accepted an invite to a dance with James.

When the dance gets boring Katey asks James to take her to the nightclub.  She walks in and sees the sensual way the people are dancing with each other and is entranced by it.  Javier spots her and asks her to dance with him, and it is like they were made to be partners, it is perfect. They then step aside to let the king and queen of La Rosa Negra dance, because when they dance, the floor is theirs.  After leaving the club James tries to take advantage of Katey, using the way she danced as his excuse.  She slaps him and races back into the club, to have Javier walk her home again. This time Susie, Katey’s sister, sees them and reports it to the manager of the hotel who fires Javier, as staff are not to mingle with the guests.

Soon after, Katey convinces Javier to enter a dance competition and they get through the semi finals by combining their dance style to form a routine of sensual elegance.

During the finals their dance is interrupted by a police raid on the venue and they escape separately. Javier finds out that the revolution is over and to celebrate he sees Katey and together they celebrate in a way that their relationship has been hinting at for the entire movie.

The next morning Katey is told that they are leaving
Cuba and races off to say goodbye to Javier.  The final scene is of them dancing. As the King and Queen of La Rosa Negra.

Some quotes from the movie:

(Standing in the nightclub for the first time, watching the dancers)

Katey-“look how they feel the music”

James (looking as the sensuous moves)- “oh, they’re feeling it alright”

(Laying on the beach after ‘celebrating’ together)

Javier-“we didn’t win the contest”

Katey-“no, but the consolation prize is pretty good”

(While saying goodbye to each other)

Katey-“I am taking you with me”

Javier-“I am keeping you here”

(Places his hand over his heart)

Despite what the critics have said, this was a fantastic movie. I loved every minute of it.  Being a fan of dancing, these routines were amazing. There is a quote that I know

“Dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire”

I believe that, that quote, backs up this movie.  Every move is so blatantly sexual; you truly believe that all of these people are consumed with lust for each other.

I have never seen the first Dirty Dancing but I recommend the second one.

task 5

October 31, 2006

today i tried to start putting the finishing touches on my website, but that didn’t happen

i found out that there is alot more stuff i need, that i don’t understand

i am going to neeed help with this please miss olsen, ’twas easier in python

so far i have completed half my site, i have done the basics, now i am just fancying it up.

Task 5–Planning

October 24, 2006

The goal of this database/site is to create a classifieds site aimed at Geraldton Senior College students and their parents/guardians who are looking at buying school supplies at a more reasonable price than in the shops.

Extended useage of a computer program can lead to things like eye problems and back problems from poor posture in seating, as the designer i can address these issues by making my site very user friendly, quick and easy to use with not alot of stuffing around.

people can abuse my page by changing the features, (by accessing design veiw) and by attempting to sell faulty/ not in good condition products, therefore ruining the sites good reputation!!!

to stop things like this from happening i could save it in a passworded file, make sure nothing can be changed(save it as read-only) have user policies etc.

i have done my gantt chart and it is saved in microsoft excel.

Task 5– first day

October 20, 2006

today i did my gantt chart for my new task in microsoft access

i think that repeating a previous task in an easier even though different program isnot very beneficial for us. i, personally, think that we should be able to buy of sell what ever we want to instead of a classifieds or auction site for the school. i think that by allowing us to still create a database but about something that we are actually interested in will allow us to be more creative and show off our interests and we will enjoy the task more. thank you

House of Flying Daggers directed by Yimou Zhang

October 8, 2006

The House of Flying Daggers, directed by Yimou Zhang is a Japanese Martial Arts film about a warrior who breaks a beautiful member of a rebel army, Mei, out of prison to help her rejoin her fellows, the plot gets more and more complicated with two men, Leo and Gin, both falling in love with Mei, while she only loves Gin, resulting in a deadly battle for her love. The major downfall of this battle is that Mei is killed by Leo during the battle.

Japanese Martial arts films have been described as “Fairytales and sci-fi on crack”. the implications of this are that fairytales relate to a damsel in distress, leading to a quest and a battle of good vs evil. The implication of them being “on crack” give the idea of everything being exaggerated greatly, emotions are all over the place and people are having random thoughts.  ‘House of Flying Daggers’ reflects all implications of this comment with scenes showing lots of bright colours and every sound being exaggerated greatly, for example, a rock hitting a bamboo tree sounds like the beat of a drum. When  a dagger is thrown at a person it is thrown with total accuracy over a great distance and when/if it is dodged it is done with lightening quick reflexes and ‘matrix style’ moves.  The main character, Mei, changes her mind all of the time.  First she refuses Gin because she is in love with Leo and then refuses Leo because she has fallen in love with Gin.

A pattern with Japanese films is that they tend to focus on images and sound effects rather than the telling of a story.  Some examples from the movie are the snow in the final battle and the love triangle.
When Leo and Gin are fighting the snow comes up really fast.  This symbolises death and it, in a way, conveys to the audience that it is not only Mei dying but also Mei’s love for Leo dying as she chooses to sacrifice herself to save Gin.
The Love Triangle is an idea that the viewer is given throughout the entire with when they see that Leo ang Gin are both in love with Mei. An image of the triangle is actually shown during the final battle with Mei, the one who everything depends on is seen standing near the pair fighting over her but an overhead shot shows that she is making the 3rd side of a triangle:
                                                                                Mei
                                                                                  #
                                                                    Love           Love
                                                                     #                     #
                                                               Gin                     Leo
                                                                         Fighting

”House of Flying Daggers is beautifully tragic” this was printed by the New York Times in 2005.  I think that this means that the story involves a love that could be so beautiful and so perfect and the tragedy is that, in this live, the love can never be and only through death can the two be together.  I agree with this statement. It is a beautiful movie, all movements are graceful and well done, scenery and colours are stunning and the death scene, although tragic, is still gorgeous like the rest of the movie, pristine white snow, harsh red blood stains and girl who died to save the one she loved.

I usually don’t like these type of films but i really enjoyed House of Flying Daggers.
